Phonetic imitation of VOT in L2 English: Variation as a function of model talker
نویسنده
چکیده
The study focused on phonetic imitation in the speech of Polish learners of English, who were exposed to two pronunciation varieties: Polishaccented English and native English. The phonetic variables under investigation were voicing lag values in word-initial /p k/ and voicing lead values in word-initial /b g/. The stimuli were monosyllabic English words provided by two model talkers: a native speaker of English and a native speaker of Polish. It was found that the magnitude of phonetic imitation differed as a function of model talker. The results suggest that L2 phonetic imitation may be affected by attitudinal factors and the stage of acquisition of a given pronunciation feature.

Structure in talker-specific phonetic realization: Covariation of stop consonant VOT in American English
Variation across talkers in the acoustic-phonetic realization of speech sounds is a pervasive property of spoken language. The present study provides evidence that variation across talkers in the realization of American English stop consonants is highly structured. Positive voice onset time (VOT) was examined for all six word-initial stop categories in isolated productions of CVC syllables and ...
متن کاملImitation interacts with one's second-language phonology but it does not operate cross-linguistically
This study explored effects of simultaneous use of late bilinguals’ languages on their second-language (L2) pronunciation. We tested (1) if bilinguals effectively inhibit the first language (L1) when simultaneously processing L1 and L2, (2) if bilinguals, like natives, imitate subphonemic variation, (3) if bilinguals’ imitation operates crosslinguistically, and (4) if imitation interacts with p...
متن کاملImitation of a VOT continuum by native speakers of English and Spanish: evidence for phonetic category formation.
This study examined imitation of a voice onset time (VOT) continuum ranging from/da/to/ta/by by subjects differing in age and/or linguistic experience. The subjects did not reproduce the incremental increases in VOT linearly, but instead showed abrupt shifts in VOT between two or three VOT response "modes." The location of the response shifts occurred at the same location as phoneme boundaries ...
متن کاملIndividual Talker and Token Covariation in the Production of Multiple Cues to Stop Voicing
BACKGROUND/AIMS Previous research found that individual talkers have consistent differences in the production of segments impacting the perception of their speech by others. Speakers also produce multiple acoustic-phonetic cues to phonological contrasts. Less is known about how multiple cues covary within a phonetic category and across talkers. We examined differences in individual talkers acro...
متن کاملIndividual differences in phonetic cue use in production and perception of a non-native sound contrast
The current work examines native Korean speakers' perception and production of stop contrasts in their native language (L1, Korean) and second language (L2, English), focusing on three acoustic dimensions that are all used, albeit to different extents, in both languages: voice onset time (VOT), f0 at vowel onset, and closure duration. Participants used all three cues to distinguish the L1 Korea...
